Document Summary

Unit six ornamental plants (pages 399 416) In contrast to plants that yield utilitarian products, ornamental plants are appreciated for their aesthetic qualities or are used to beautify the appearance of another object. All of these factors subtly influence the choice of ornamental plants: texture: texture is a component that is often subconsciously perceived. From birth, people learn to associate certain visual patterns with tactile sensations. Eventually people develop visual impressions of textures that allow them to feel through their eyes. People often infer the texture without actually feeling how rough or slick a surface is: line: line is another aspect of beauty that often is not consciously appreciated except by designers or architects. Yet one"s choice of plants is frequently determined by their natural or inducible sizes or outlines. Differences in form can help determine how a plant is used as an ornamental. The horticulture trade into three major groups usually divides ornamentals: nursery plants, florist crops, and houseplants.
