Chapter 2 Looking at Computers Understanding Your Computer A computer is a data processing device that performs four major functions 1 Gathers data or allows users to input data 2 Processes data into information 3 Outputs data and information 4 Stores data and information Difference between data and information Data is a representation of a fact a figure or an idea Can be a number a word a picture or even a recording of sound Information is data that has been organized or presented in a meaningful fashion data that is usefulHow do computers interact with data and information Collect a bunch of data and put it together into useful information How do computers process data into information With language called binary language This language consists of just two digits 0 and 1 Each 0 and 1 is a binary digit or bitEight binary digits combine to make one byteWhat else can bits and bytes be used for Also used to represent the data and information that it inputs and outputs Amounts of bytes include Kilobytes megabytes and gigabytes y Kilobyte 1000 bytes y Megabyte 1 million bytes y Gigabyte 1 billion bytes y Terabyte 1 trillion bytesHow does your computer process bits and bytes y Hardware is any part of the computer you can physically touch y Application Software is the set of programs you use on a computer to help you carry out tasks such as writing a research paper y System Software is the set of programs that enables your computers hardware devices and application software to work togethery Operating System is the program that controls the way in which your computer system functions y Notebook Computer is a portable computer that is powered by batteries and has a keyboard a monitor and other devices integrated into a single compact case y Netbook is a small lightweight notebook computer that is generally 7 to 10 inches wide and has longer battery life than a notebook computer
