Such situations coupled with positive self-talk about the attractiveness of the other and heightened physiological arousal help define one as having romantic feelings for the other. Attraction to another person is an important component in the development of romantic relationships and friendships. Men tend to engage in stonewalling more than women and women tend to respond more negatively to such silence than men do. Such expectations may even be relationship-specific or situation-specific. Role competence involves the ability to recognize differences in such role expectations (e. g. , gender roles) and respond in appropriate ways: self competence: as a new relationship develops, it both changes and challenges our sense of self. The differentiating stage of relationship development demonstrates how often we perceive intimate relationships as threatening to result in a loss or diminishing of the self. Maintaining self-competence within important relationships is often a balancing act.
