Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs  2 groups of human needs are DEFIENCY AND GROWTH  Levels of Needs in pyramid (starting at bottom): 1. Psychological 2. Safety 3.Love/Belongingness 4. Esteem 5. Actualization  A good leader needs to know where a person is located on the pyramid in order to determine an effective motivator for that person/ employee 2. Herzberg’s Hygiene and Motivation Theory  Two factor theory  Job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction act independently of each other  Strive to achieve hygiene needs satisfaction is only temporary  2 sets of needs: Basic survival needs and Higher level physchological growth needs  EXAMPLES: Hygiene Factors Motivators Job Security Challenging work Compensation recognition Working Conditions Personal growth Co-Workers Advancement CANNOT use motivators until all hygiene factors are met 3.
