Document Summary

Chapter 2 review of chemistry (pages 20 32 summary) Carbohydrates, lipids and proteins all composed of smaller building blocks. Atom: smallest unit of an element that still exhibits the properties of that element. Consist of a nucleus, surrounding the nucleus are electrons. In elemental state the # of electrons of an atom = the # of protons & the atom is electrically neutral. Electrons travel around the nucleus at high speeds each one in several possible energy levels. Each level has a maximum # of electrons (2 in first, 8 in second, etc. ) Energy level nearest nucleus = lower energy electrons. Energy levels further form nucleus = higher energy electrons. Elements are determined by the number of protons in the atom. Chemical properties of elements determined by # of electrons in outermost energy level. Interacts with other atoms when two atoms come together. Covalent bonds: strongest of chemical bonds, formed by the sharing of a pair of electrons.
