FRHD 1010 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Asclepius, Health Promotion, Health Canada
Document Summary
Much discussion as to whether health equals wellness or wellness equals health. Our most enduring icon of medicine and health and wellness is of the greek god of health and medicine asklepios or known by his roman name aesculapius. Their families legacy is our understanding of the words panacea and hygiene. Panacea: to heal; a remedy for all difficulties; a cure-all. Hygiene: healthy; akin to well and living; a science of the establishment and maintenance of health. Holism: an emphasis on the interconnectedness between an individual and his or her. In canada, we look at the worldviews of aboriginals for health and well-being mind, body and spirit. Aboriginal groups share the encouragement to balance ourselves through the four aspects of self: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. We are asked to live in our four fundamental values: kindness, honesty, sharing, strength. The world healthy organization emphasizes the importance of the preventive side of health.
