FRHD 1010 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Basal Metabolic Rate, Nutrient, Blood Sugar
Document Summary
Essential nutrients: provide energy, build and repair body tissues and regulate body functions: the body cannot manufacture these for itself, water, protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, minerals. Our bodies are 60% water (85% makes up blood, 70% makes up muscle and 75% makes up brain) We receive energy from the macronutrients protein, fat and carbohydrates: they are called macronutrients because we need these in the largest amounts. Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients because our body only needs small amounts. Carries nutrients, maintains temperature, lubricates joints, helps with digestion, rids the body of waste and help produce sweat. You lose 2-2. 5 liters of water per day through sweat, urine exhalation and bowls. To ensure we have enough water we must drink 8-12 cups of water per day. Basal metabolic rate (bmr): the number of calories you need to sustain your body at rest. Every person has different needs depending on age, sex, height, weight and activity level.
