Prejudice and predictions: ageism is a prejudice whereby people are categorized and judged solely on the basis of their chronological age. Believed to be institutionalized in our culture: according to the stereotype embodiment theory stereotypes can: become internalized, operate unconsciously, become self referential and influence future pathway"s to having psychological, behavioural and physiological effects. Ageism contributes to lower levels of exercise, day-circadian rhythm is lost and all these effects of ageism can affect health. Stereotypes are evident in elderspeak the condescending way of speaking to older adults that resembles baby talk with simple and short sentences: the demographic shift is a shift in the proportions of the populations of various ages. Unusual events (war, great depression) caused deviation from the pattern. Demographers and politicians sometimes report dependency ratios which are a calculation of the number of self-sufficient, productive adults compared with the number of dependents (children and elderly) in a given population.
