Chapter 16
Climate Change
•any long-term significant change in the “average weather” that a region experiences
•greenhouse gases: primary gases air carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and
water vapour
•the greenhouse effect: carbon dioxide allows a small amount of solar radiation through
Earth’s atmosphere and traps it so the heat generated warms Earth - rest of solar radiation is
bounced back into space
•without greenhouse gases average temperature would be 18 degrees celsius
•climate forcings: physical factors that force a net increase or net decrease of heat in the
climate system as a while
•todays atmosphere contains 32% more carbon dioxide than it did at the beginning of the
industrial era
what is global warming
•can be defined as a sustained increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere
that causes changes in the global climate
•average global temperature rose by almost 0.83 degrees celsius over the last century
•projected additional warming is 1-6.4 degrees celsius over the next century
The Impact of Global Warming
•experts have predicted severe drought and a rise in ocean levels of 2-20 feet
•hurricanes are becoming more intense
•Arctic region could have an ice-free summer by 2040
The 4 Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover
•buy products packaged in recycled materials or purchase products that have little or no
packaging
•packaging makes up about half of our garbage by volume, 1/3 by weight
•bing reusable bags when grocery shopping
•use jars, plastic containers to store food
•recover - example is the refurbishing of old computers which are then donated to schools
Four Laws of Ecology
1. everything is connected to everything else
2. everything must go somewhere
3. nature knows best
4. there is no such thing as a free lunch
The Environment and Our Health
•if we continue our pattern of carbon-intensive energy use, combined with climate change, we
could expect up to 6 million deaths per year globally by 2030
Environment and Psychosocial Health
•human need a sense of belonging and familiarity
•elevated sea level, flooding, and extra weather can result in people being displaced from their
home and businesses, deaths of family and friends, etc
