Chapter 12
Defining Science:
Process of observing, thinking and reflecting on actions and events
Children engaged in scientific thinking are constructing a framework of
relationships within which factual info can be organized into meaningful and
useful concepts
Science encourages children to explore their environments and reflect on
their observations and discoveries
Manipulation, Observation and Discovery:
Children learn science by manipulation, observation of results of their
manipulations and discovery of relationships and effects
Learning in the area of science primarily physical knowledge and logico-
mathematical knowledge
Physical Knowledge: Gaining knowledge from the materials themselves
Vygotsky’s Constructivist Approach:
Active engagement with phenomena:
o Students ask questions
o Students mindfully interact with concrete materials
Use application of knowledge
Multiple representations
Use of learning communities
Authentic tasks
The Scientific Process:
A cycle of forming hypotheses, making generalizations, and then repeating
the cycle
Includes observing, classifying, and comparing, measuring, communicating,
experimenting, relating, inferring and applying
o Skill used in organizing info
o Children must be able to compare and contrast the prosperities of
objects or info
o Process of examining objects and events of similarities and
o Process skills necessary for collecting data
o Children can be encouraged to share their observations and their
collections through a variety of means
