CHAPTER 3
Planning a Learning Environment
• Something that works for the physical space of the classroom
• Planning is never really finished
o Continual cycle of making and implementing plans, observing, evaluating the
effectiveness of your plans, and using that info for more planning
• Room arrangements and instructional materials and equipment will reflect your goals and
expectations for the children
• Goals of programs include helping children to do these things
o Learn that they are capable learners, that they can make choices, and that their ideas
are respected
o Learn and apply skills in a meaningful context
o Explore a variety of materials
o Become able to communicate their needs and feelings
o Learn to use and appreciate many sources of information
o Become able to express themselves creatively
Structuring the Physical Environment
• How to furniture is arranged
• Children need to be involved in planning the space
• Room arrangement
o General guidelines
▪ Space must accommodate multiple uses
▪ Areas in which water is used should be as close to the water supply as possible
▪ Quiet areas should be close together
▪ Noisy areas should be grouped on the opposite side of the room as quiet areas
o Vertical space
▪ Used for interactive activities
• Physical climate
o Softer spaces, more natural light, use of ethnic colours in the environment
• Assessing the environment
o Simple unit
▪ One obvious use and no subparts for children to manipulate
o Complex unit
▪ 2 different play materials that children can manipulate or improvise with
o Super unit
▪ 3 or more play materials juxtaposed
▪ 8x ore effective at holdig a child’s attetio
o Primary environment
▪ Combining centers
