Most gay and lesbians have gender identities consistent with their anatomic sex (wouldnt prefer to be the other gender) A small percentage are transgender (they have gender identities that are different from their anatomic sex) For gay men, the concept of being gay centred on the possibility for emotional involvement and relationships with other people who felt the same way, rather than only on sexual behaviour. A signi cant percentage of people are neither exclusively heterosexual nor exclusively gay or lesbian. In absence of heterosexual outlets, adolescents and people in isolated populations may have sexual experiences with members of their own gender while maintaining heterosexual identities.
