Sperm that have completed their journey secrete the enzyme hyaluronidase: an enzyme that briefly thins that zona pellucida, enabling the sperm to penetrate. Once the sperm has entered the zona pellucida thickens, locking other sperm out. The corresponding chromosomes in the sperm and the ovum line up opposite another. Conception occurs as the chromosomes from the sperm and the ovum combine to form 23 new pairs of chromosomes which carry a unique set of genetic intrusions.
