FRHD 2100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Seminal Vesicle, Oedipus Complex, Sexual Differentiation
Document Summary
The process by which boys and girls come to behave in line with what is expected of men and women. Aristotle believed that hot semen male; cold semen female. At about 3 weeks, primitive heart is developed. Y chromosome start to cause testes to differentiate. If no y, then ovaries start to develop. Thus if the embryo only has x, it will be female. Development of seminiferous tubule, female gonads develop later. Ovaries start to form at about 11-12 weeks. Testosterone causes wolffian duct to differentiate into epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles. Dihydrotestosterone causes external genitals start to develop. Mullerian-inhibiting substance (mis) inhibit mullerian duct to develop. The relative small amount of androgen in female fetus causes degeneration of wolffian ducts. Mullerian ducts fallopian tubes, uterus, upper of vagina. This occurs even in absence of female sex hormones. If xy but no testo produced female sex organs. 10 weeks = descended to the upper edge of pelvis.
