14 views5 pages

Document Summary

Paraphilias involve sexual arousal in response to an unusual stimuli (children, non-consenting individuals, nonhuman objects, and pain/humiliation). More men than women have been reported to have paraphilias. A diagnosis of a paraphilia requires a person to act on these urges in unacceptable/harmful ways. Therapists have suggested that paraphilia"s represent a type of sexual compulsion/addiction due to numerous reports that paraphilic people have felt overcome by uncontrollable urges. Paraphilias vary in severity, (related back to the continuum discussed in lecture 21). Can go from someone liking that their spouse wears heels during sex, to not being able to get off during sex without partner wearing heels, to not even wanting the person, just the object. These are argued to not even be considered paraphilic because they do not affect other people. It is argued that political views have too much of an effect on considering the severity of certain paraphilias and as a result, they should be removed from the dsm.
