Chapter 10 learners who are deaf or hard of hearing. Many member of the deaf community consider themselves part of a cultural minority rather than as disabled. Deafness is one of the most challenging fields of study in all of special education. Most ppl who are deaf have some residual hearing (the amount of hearing remaining after hearing loss) Hearing impairment is a broad term that covers individuals. Each succeeding number of decibels that a person cannot detect indicates a certain degree of hearing impairment deaf and hard of hearing. Deaf person: is one whose hearing disability precludes successful processing of linguistic information through audition, with/without a hearing aid: people with an educational viewpoint are concerned with how speak and develop language. Person hard of hearing: generally, with the use of a hearing aid, has residual hearing sufficient to enable successful processing of linguistic info through audition: educators are extremely concerned about the age of onset of hearing impairment.
