Sensory acuity close to that of an adult but processing differ because of lack of experience. Mental representation: thinking of objects that are not physically present. Brain doubles it weight in the first year. Understand many things said to them and spoken around them. Depends on language exposure, cognitive and social skills, and temperament. Toddler must listen to himself as he attempts regulation. Several modes of personality that categorize the traits of individuals. Role model to become less egocentric and more empathetic. Self-recognition clear cut and shows more interest in own face. Imitation and deferred imitation lead to pretend play. Decontextualization: ability to think and act outside the context where learning initially took place. Associative play: children play alongside and interact but remain focused on play.
