FRHD 3150 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Classical Conditioning, Reinforcement
CHAPTER 12
Decreasing Operant Behaviour
• Differential reinforcement schedules or procedures
o Schedules that reinforce specific rates of responding
• Increase and maintain positive behaviour
o Positive reinforcement, shaping, fading, chaining, stimulus discrimination training,
generalization
• Decrease operant behaviour
o Operant extinction, punishment, antecedent control procedures
Differential Reinforcement of Low Rates
• Reinforcer is presented only if a particular response occurs at a low rate
• Limited-responding DRL
o Max number of responses during a certain time interval in order for reinforcer to occur
• Spaced-responding DRL
o Specific behaviour not occurring during a specified interval, and after interval has
passed, an instance of that behaviour must them occur in order for a reinforcer to occur
Differential Reinforcement of Zero Responding
• Schedule in which a reinforcer is presented only if specific response does not occur during a
specific period of time
Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible Behaviour
• Decrease targets response by withholding reinforcers for it and by reinforcing an incompatible
response
Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behaviour
• Involves the extinction of a problem behaviour combined with reinforcing a behaviour that is
typographically dissimilar to the problem behaviour
Pitfalls of Differential Reinforcement Procedures for Decreasing Behaviour
• Unaware-misapplication pitfalls

Document Summary
Decreasing operant behaviour: differential reinforcement schedules or procedures, schedules that reinforce specific rates of responding. Increase and maintain positive behaviour: positive reinforcement, shaping, fading, chaining, stimulus discrimination training, generalization, decrease operant behaviour, operant extinction, punishment, antecedent control procedures. Differential reinforcement of low rates: reinforcer is presented only if a particular response occurs at a low rate. Differential reinforcement of zero responding: schedule in which a reinforcer is presented only if specific response does not occur during a specific period of time. Differential reinforcement of incompatible behaviour: decrease targets response by withholding reinforcers for it and by reinforcing an incompatible response. Involves the extinction of a problem behaviour combined with reinforcing a behaviour that is typographically dissimilar to the problem behaviour.
