Each medium has a formal characteristic that affects the observation process and each allows for certain predictions. The mechanics of media and the observer: factors should be taken into account when considering the use of media: Advantages and disadvantages of the media of observation: firsthand observation. Advantages: immediacy of the information gained, wide range of information available, ow of action present. Disadvantages: screening out some behaviours while focusing on others, human factor (individual biases and prejudices, memory of events, effect of the observer"s presence on the events being observed, the still picture or slide. Advantages: reexamine the picture; order of sequence. Disadvantages: re ect selectivity of photographer, presents a static view of the instance, forcing the interviewer to seek additional information or make inferences, photographer makes the selection for the viewer, audio recordings.
