Our task: free the client from stuckness (=opposite of intentionality, lack of creativity) And facilitate development of creative thinking & expansion of choices. Stuckness = inability to resolve conflict/achieve goals, lack of motivation/understanding, inability to reconcile discrepancies, and deal with incongruity. Empathic confrontation: gently, influencing skill invites clients to examine their stories for discrepancies b/t verbal & nonverbal communication, between expressed attitudes and behaviours, or conflict with others. Effective confrontation leads clients to creative new ways of thinking and increased intentionality. It is not going against the client; more going with the client. Antisocial client solid confrontation, firm approach needed, may sneer and disrespect nice helpers but may respond well to a counselor who does not take garbage. European americans/african americans (more outspoken) respond well. Asians (subtle) gentle, polite confrontations: avoid stereotyping! Empathic relationship + good listening skills = essential, if you are to challenge client.
