GEOG 1350 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Bed Load, Flow Velocity, Suspended Load
Document Summary
Hydrologic cycle: water evaporates from earth"s surface, precipitates on the oceans and land, some of the water that falls on land is rain or snow which infiltrates the ground and returns to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration. Surface flow, called run off, finds its way to small streams which are tributaries of larger streams, or rivers a large natural stream. The region drained by a single stream is called a drainage basin, each stream has it"s own basin. Important aspect of the river is its slope or gradient which is calculated by the drop in elevation of the channel over some horizontal distance, it decreases down stream and its lowest is at the river mouth. The valley of a river is steeper sided and narrower in its headwaters than near the river mouth where a wide flood plain may be present.
