Previous leadership theories discussed ignore the importance of the leader as a communicator who inspirers others. Charisma: a certain quality of an individual personality, by virtue of which he or she is set apart from ordinary people and treated as endowed with supernatural, superhuman, or at least specifically exceptional powers or qualities. Charismatic leadership theory: followers make attributions of heroic or extraordinary leadership abilities when they observe certain behaviours. Characteristics of a charismatic leader: have vision, willing to take personal risks to achieve that vision , are sensitive to followers" needs, exhibit behaviours that are out of the ordinary. It"s a four step process: vision= a long-term strategy for how to attain a goal by linking the present with a future. Some visions fit the times and circumstances and reflect the uniqueness of the organization. Must believe the vision is challenging yet attainable: a vision is incomplete without an accompanying vision statement (formal articulation of an organization"s vision or mission.
