Leadership Chapter 1 Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. Leadership is a process - Defining it as a process means not a trait or characteristic, but a transactional event that occurs between leader and followers - Process implies leader affects and is not affected by followes - An interactive event - When leadership is defined as an even it becomes available to everyone Leadership involves influence - concerned with how the leader affects followers Leadership occurs in groups - groups are the context in which leadership takes place Leadership involves common goals - leaders and followers have a mutual purpose although the leaders and followers are closely linked, it is the leader who often initiates the relationship, creates the communication linkages, and carries the burned for maintaining the relationship Traits versus Process Leadership - trait perspective suggests that certain individuals have special innate or inborn characteristics or qualities that make them leaders, and that it is these qualities that differentiate them from nonleaders - trait viewpoint conceptualizes leadership as property or set of properties possessed in varying degrees by diff people - suggests it resides in select people - restricts leadership to those who are believed to have special, usually inbor, talents Assigned versus Emergent Leadership - leadership based on occupying a position- assigned leadership - when others perceive an individual as the most influential member of a group or an organization, regardless of title- emergent leadership - positive communication behaviors that account for successful leadership emergency ie verbal involvement, informed, seeking opinions of others, initiating new ideas, firm but not rigid - dominant, intelligent, confident about performace- more likely to be seen as leaders by members - social identity theory o from this perspective, leadership emergency is the degree to which a person fits with the identity of the group as a whole o emerge as leaders in he group when they become like the group prototype Leadership and Power - related bc power is part of the influence process - have power when have ability to affect others’ beliefs, attitudes
