There are two basic ways to develop compeiive advantage: Enhance the product or service through informaion systems. Organizaions look to technology to help retain customers, reduce costs, and create barriers for compeitors to enter the market. Primary aciviies deal with the main or core parts of the good or service that the organizaion produces or provides. Support aciviies are secondary to the good or service that is produced. These primary and support aciviies are oten referred to as business funcions. These aciviies are oten supported by funcional systems, which facilitate the work of a single department or business funcion. Funcional silos - an organizaional area such as markeing that work independently of each other and operates without considering other organizaional areas. Business processes are cross-funcional, cut across funcional areas. Cross-departmental or cross-funcional systems integrate data and business processes across diferent departments and systems.
