Personality is the reflection of the dynamic interplay of internal motives and conflicts. Endorse the unconscious influence on our conscious behaviours, thoughts and feelings. Use the introspective method: analysis of internal thoughts and images, including dreams. Trained as a medical doctor but became interested in psychiatry. His version of psychoanalytic theory became increasingly subjective over time and lacked the objectivity typically associated with science. The goal is to bring the unconscious to the surface and into conscious awareness so it may be interpreted by a psychoanalyst. Reflects eros, both the sex instinct and the self preservation instinct. Eros is in constant conflict of thanatos, the willingness to be destructive towards ourselves (ie use of dangerous drugs: when it cannot engage in pleasure, it uses primary process thinking: generating cognitive images of pleasurable stimuli. Comes in the form of wish fulfillment: fantasies reflect the wishes and desires of the id. May result in catharsis; reduction of tension by engaging in processes.
