Building a National Audience for Music and Entertainment
-National Versus Regional
important change that took place in popular music in the first half of the twentieth
century was the emergence of a national audience (previously music was
contained to local and regional surroundings)
technological and marketing developments in radio and motion pictures played a
central role in making popular music available in all parts of the country
radio technology (originally for military) developed at the end of the 19th century
-The Rise of the Radio Networks in the 1920s (How Did they Work?)
an effective way of reaching large audience was to link a number of local and
regional stations together to form a network
-programming could be run from one central location
-range of programming
-most music was performed live on the air
once radio came on the scene, a song could become popular almost overnight
-The Migration of Big Corporate Money Away from Radio to Television
1940s audiences moved towards tv
the transformation of local and regional radio stations in response to the early age
of televiosion played a critical role in the development of country and western and
rhythm and blues, and, in turn, figured prominenetly in the emergence of early rock
and roll

sheet music was a principle way to sell music in the early 20th century
Tin Pan Alley: concentrated area of NYC where sheet music was sold. Named
from a high number of musicians playing music in one area at once
Sectional Verse-Chorus: the sectional chorus is the song listeners are likely to
recognize, while the sectional verse is a kind of introduction that set the scene for
the song
Sectional Choruses are often cast in a 32 measure structural pattern all AABA form
The sectional verse-chorus format is rare in rock music, but the AABA form
common to so many Tin Pan Alley sectional verses plays a central role in rock
In Tin Pan Alley era, the basic unit of trade was a song itself, not a specific
recording of the song
-a successful song was recorded by a series of artists each trying to tailor the
tune to suit his or her personal style and the more versions, the more the
songwriter would make
Broadway musicals became a prime means for getting songs heard
By getting a song performed on national radio, a publisher could expect the best
chance of success
Until rock and roll, the business of music was in sheet music sales
The Singer Steps Forward
-Publishers had to convince singers to sing their songs so that it would get heard on
radio. As well radio producers were involved in these discussion to play what the
public wanted to hear
-1935-1945 Big Band Era - dance bands employed a rhythm section of bass, drums,
piano and guitar combined with horns to create arrangements for dancing
-many important jazz musicians played in big bands
-Frank Sinatra: established a new model for the pop-music singer. Made the singer,
not the band and was the star of the show
paved the way for future rock and roll singers i.e. elvis
he enjoyed fan attention but continued to think of himself as a musician and owed
his praise to other musicians
