A symphony to many traditional concertgoers is the highest achievement not only of classical music but of western art music as a hole. Not long before this time, a symphony was known as an opening act it was loud and placed at the beginning of a concert or opera to catch the audiences attention and to get them to quiet down. The genre itself emerged from lighter instrumental types such as a one movement piece known as an sinfonia and opera ouvertures. He himself conducted the first performance of his symphony with the concert lasting almost 4 hours. At the time it was at a cultural crossroads. It had become the capital of a large multinational empire with multiple languages and many cultures. It was a fortified city surrounded by defensive walls where there is an open space where the glacis was.
