Paris in 1830 was at the center of a civilized world. Using money from an important prize he had one he was able to make a name for himself by paying to put on a concert that would feature his new romantic symphony known as the fantastic. Since that day it has become one of the most frequently played works in the standard repertory. Program music: music that describes something or tells a story relates to the first performance of the symphony. The fantastic symphony is typical of the romantic movement in literature and other arts focusing on the creative artist, on the interior life of the emotions, the supernatural and love. The highlights of this unspoken drama include the imagined execution by the guillotine of the lovesick hero and his opium induced visions of a witches dance of the dead. It is a grand metropolis that many of its associations had not yet been realized.
