Propaganda can be used to mislead people and play on their fears, media can mislead a certain political narrative to become the norm. Mill and the market place of ideas (people should be free to have a variety of different viewpoints, an open society. One can still learn things from engaging with false viewpoints. We need to understand why our view point is correct, which means developing arguments in its favour. If we suppress a wide range of view points we will be epistemically worse off. Some viewpoints are not represented in the media because they are offensive. We don"t think the state should silence view points, but what about these kinds of cases. This is why we have restrictions on hate speech. The problem is that they are opposed to an epistemic system-scientific inquiry- which is generally held to be our best way of finding out the truth about the world around us.
