Unit 2: the earth and its moons: sept 19, 2016 to sept 25, 2016. Earth orbits the sun in a plane called the ecliptic: The ecliptic is a celestial sphere that the sun traces. The plane create by the sun"s path on the celestial sphere and the plane of earth"s orbit are identical. The earth is tilted at an angle of 23. 5 degrees. Because of this tilt, the two loops meet in two places. Where the sun is heading northward, this intersection is called the vernal equinox. Halfway around the two circles they meet again at the autumnal equinox. The daily and annual rhythms of the sky, earth, and all life on it arise from three celestial motions: Earth"s spinning, which causes day and night, as well as causing the apparent daily motion of the celestial sphere and all the objects on it.
