Development of a truly global mass media. 20th century began with a world divided among empires, and at the end has become a world in which imperialism is dead. After 1945 there was a significant decolonization as former colonies forcefully claimed or were granted independence. Empire was recreated on a new basis symbolized by the partition of europe and the creation of the iron. Curtain dividing the allies of the us on one side and allies of the soviet union on the other. Cold war sustained period of superpower rivalry that led to a nuclear arms race and shaped the economic political and social priorities of these countries and their allies for 40 years. First world industrial democracies allied with the us. Second world ussr and allies: are now at least formally committed to market economics and democracy. Third world encompassing all the developing world nations aligned with neither bloc.
