Document Summary

In politics an ideology is a set of interrelated beliefs about how society is organized and how it should function. An ideology provides an interpretive map for understanding the world. A political culture consist of the characteristics, values, beliefs, and behaviours of a society"s members in regard to politics. Political ideas are categorized as left-wing, right-wing or centrist/moderate which sit between the left and right: putting down welfare fraud and demanding mandatory workfare or eliminating public funding for abortion would be considered right wing. Increasing minimum wage, increasing spending on assistance for developing countries and banning the use of replacement workers during a strike would be considered left wing. Generally to be on the right wing in anglo-american societies means that one subscribes to an individualistic belief system. What one achieves in life is due primarily to his or her own efforts, and that the welfare of society is best promoted by allowing individuals to pursue their own interests.
