Canadian courts: law, politics, and process 2-16: An introduction to politics, law, and the judicial process: Law: classic natural law theory held that for a law to be valid it had to be morally permissible st. International law is said to include norms or customary practices of states, but it is not always clear what those norms or customs are and states may disagree over their precise content and meaning. Private vs. public law: both international and domestic (national) law can be subdivided into private law and public law, private law rules that govern relationships and disputes between individuals, groups, and corporate entities. Consists of torts (responsibilite civile), contract law, family law, and property law: public law rules that govern relationships and disputes involving the state. Consists of constitutional law, criminal law, administrative law, and tax law. In both private and public law, certain rules are concerned more with substance, whereas other rules are concerned more with procedure.
