Document Summary

Motivation: need or desire that energizes and directs behavior o. Darwin"s theory grew: classify behaviors as instincts, didn"t explain human behavior just named them. Instinct: complex behavior that is rigidly patterned throughout a species and is unlearned. Infant rooting and sucking: psychologists believe it is both psychological needs and wants. The idea that psychological need creates an aroused tension o state (a drive) that motivates an organism to satisfy the need. Need (food, water) drive (hunger, thirst) drive reducing behaviors (eating, o drinking) Aim is for homeostasis: tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state, the regulation of any aspect of the body chemistry around a particular level. Can be pulled by incentives: positive or negative environment stimulus that motivates behavior. When there is a need and incentive feel strongly driven: starving person smells bread. Human motivation seeks optimum levels of arousal: needs satisfied, still feel driven, too much can cause stress, not enough, bored.
