There are multiple possible versions of the attribute. eg. extroversion has a spectrum - they can vary considerably but still be considered extroverts: continuous variable eg. a highschool gpa- anywhere from 40 (fail) to. Someone scores by being put into one category or the other. Value a possible score on some measure of a variable. within a variable the value can be from 1 to 10 in severity or frequency. someone could be on the lower end or the higher end. Score an actual data point on the measure of the variable; someones actual score on the measure. So, to sum this all up we use the formula (x m)2 (it"s simply the sum symbol ( ) preceding the expression for an individual squared deviation score. This concept, the sum of the squared deviation scores is also represented by ss= (x-m)2). this sum is important because it is the overall index of variability for a distribution of scores.
