PSYC 2360 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Confounding, Internal Validity, Random Assignment
Document Summary
Is a vital and versatile tool in the researcher"s toolbox. It is possible to assess the impact of the pretest directly by treating the presence of a pretest as a second independent variable. Instead of random assignment to condition, an alternative procedure for ensuring that groups are equivalent is to have the same individuals participate in all of the groups. This is called a repeated measures experimental design. Related measure design: same individuals will participate in both conditions, participants are repeatedly measured on the dependent variable after being in each condition of the experiment, pretests can also be used for repeated measures designs. Advantages and disadvantages of the repeated measures design: major advantage is that fewer research participants are needed because each individual participates in all conditions. Matched pairs design: more complicated method of assigning participants to conditions in an experiment.
