Three stages to advancement in human cognition. 1st - late 1950s to early 1960s, rapid progression from traditional psychophysics (relationship between sensation and stimulus) and experimental psychology. 2nd stage - mid-1970s fuelled by computational analysis, marked arrival of cognitive science. 3rd stage, began mid 1980s, incorporates evidence from neuroscience, animal neurophysiology, and imaging techniques to observe brain action. Foundational idea: the world contain info that is available for humans to process.
