For many years theorizing in cognitive psychology was guided by the perspective of information processing. Information processing provided the notion that complex mental events (such as learning or remembering) involve a large number of discrete steps. According to the modal model information processing involves different kinds of memory, two of which being short-term, and long-term memory. Short-term memory holds on to information currently in use: a more modern term for short-term memory is working memory which emphasises the function of this memory. Long-term memory (ltm) contains all of the information you remember: much of the material in your ltm lies dormant, so the process of retrieving it can at times be slow and effortful. As soon as the last word is read the participant is asked to recite all of the words they remember in any order: people usually remember 12-15 words in a distinct pattern:
