1993 cover of time magazine asked the question is freud dead? critics lined up on either side of the debate claiming that if he wasn"t dead, his theories are to be laid to rest. Freud"s ideas and terminology are an important part of the history of psychology as well as the greater culture. Instincts: also known as trieb in german, we can think of impulses or instincts like a tension or excitation originating from the body. Two broad categories of instincts: eros are the life instincts and thanatos are the death instincts. Psychic energy of life instincts is called libido, and the most important to freud is sex. (defn): a freudian technique in which patients talk about whatever pops into their heads, following one thought to another, without trying to control it. One thought to the next may lead the patient to reveal unconscious thoughts. Free association was useful for patients to describe their dream.
