The early work of ebbinghaus (using nonsense syllables) showed the simple rule of the amount learned depends on the time spent learning. ( you get what you pay for. ) known as the total time hypothesis. He agrees that practice will indeed enhance performance, but asserts that there are plenty other factors that may contribute to achieving mastery level. Examples: commitment of time and energy likely related to motivation, which depend on social factors and opportunity and of course, genetic influences. The detailed causal pathways underlying genius are likely to prove difficult to untangle. Further studies relating development of expertise to brain structure (cortical thickness associated with degree of practice of high divers; level of myelination in children trained extensively in calculation and music). Distributed practice effect breaking practice (learning) into shorter sessions; in contrast to massed practice (comprising fewer, longer learning sessions).
