PSYC 3390 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Sodium Oxybate, Claustrophobia, Dementia
Document Summary
Bulimia nervosa has out of control eating episodes (binges) followed by self-induced vomiting, excessive use of laxitives or the urge to purge. Anorexia nervosa is where the person eats nothing besides minimal amounts of food, where body weight drops dangerously. Eating problems were not recognized as a disorder until around 1872. Their most typical onset is adolescence and it tends to culturally specific and seem to also be going global. It is one of the most common psychological disorders on university campuses. The hallmark is eating a larger amount of food generally more junk food than fruits and veggies. The amount of food eaten is the fact that the eating is experienced as out of control. Another important criteria is that they try to compensate for the binge eating and potential weight gain by using purging techniques. Those who use laxatives are generally known to be more impulsive.
