Document Summary
Chapter 11: substance related addictive and impulse control disorders. In 1992 the catholic church declared that drug abuse and drinking and driving are sins. Polysubstance abuse is when you use multiple substances. Psychoactive substances alter mood, behaviour or both: i. e cocaine, heroin, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco. Substance use: ingestion of the substances in moderate amounts that does not interfere with social, educational or occupational functioning. Intoxication: physiological reaction to ingested substances, usually include impaired judgment, mood changes, lowered motor ability. Abuse: when the drug ingestion begins to impair your life or safety. Substance dependence: physiologically dependent on the drug requiring increasingly higher amounts of it to achieve the same effect, body will respond negatively when it is not ingested (withdrawal: drug seeking behaviour can also measure dependence (psychological dependence) Substance abuse disorders are characterized as mild (2-3 criteria), moderate (4-5 criteria) or severe (6+ criteria) Dependence can be present without abuse (i. e morphine for cancer patients)
