Sport psychologists have been interested in personality for decades. The credulous- skeptical argument: the ability to use personality to predict sport success. Personality: the consistency of social behaviour, thoughts, and emotions. The overall organization of psychological characteristics- thinking, feeling, and behaving that differentiates is from others and leads us to act consistently across time and situations. Disposition: broad, pervasive, encompassing ways of relating to particular types of people or situations. How can we make sense of the enormous number of combinations such that we can come up with a science of personality. Statistical methods to look at clusters of behaviours that are related. Trait: a relatively stable characteristic or quality that may represent a portion of ones personality; a quality used to explain an individuals behaviour across time and situation. Perfectionism: organized, compulsive, socially precise, controlled, self disciplined, and self critical. Psychological states: momentary feelings and through that change depending on the situation an time.
