Document Summary
Psych of death and dying chapter #3: denial or adaptation: the death system. Everything that makes a collection of individuals into a society and keeps that society going has implications for our relationship to death. It has often been said that america is a death denying culture, but death is intricately woven into many facets of society. In this chapter we will be looking at the death system that complex web of elements that mediate individual deaths in society and manage personal expectations related to death and dying. Death is often seen as an individual event: a person dies but society continues however sometimes deaths come en masse and threaten to overwhelm a community or nation. The sequence of effects and societal response often has similarities from one disaster to another: there are also consequential differences depending on the type of disaster and the geopolitical situation in which it has occurred.
