PSYC 3570 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Anthropomorphism
Document Summary
Chapter 10: death in the world of childhood. Most often, families followed a family rule of silence they have difficulty communicating with children about death. Teresa: 7 year old girl; quiet; enjoys her own company, interested in plant and is very involved with her family. Stanley: 7 year old; life centered around the family and his dog. Brian: 8 years old; very curious; interested in rocks and minerals, gems, animals, and underwater stories. All these children differed in their experiences and concerns with death. People within the same household can have different orientations toward death. Parents who are not able to cope with a child"s death-related curiosity on a simple, naturalistic level because of their own discomfort may be perpetuating the anxieties for still another generation. We not have a transitional generation of parents who are trying to relate to their children in an area that was off-limits when they themselves were young.
