Title: Youth-Nominated Support Team for Suicidal Adolescents
(Version 1): A Randomized Controlled Trial
Goals
- examine the efficacy of the Youth-Nominated Support Team-Version 1 which was
designed to supplement routine care for suicidal adolescents following psychiatric
hospitalization, a period of high risk for suicidal incidents

- risk = being adolescent, being suicidal, just getting out of psychiatric hospitalization,
parental psychiatric disorder and dysfunction
- protective = connectedness with teachers and school and supportive relationships with
unrelated adults
Measures of Data Collection (what is measured, # of times, and how)
- the Suicide Ideation Questionnaire-Junior assesses the frequency of suicidal thoughts
- the Spectrum of Suicide Behaviour Scale rates history of suicidally
- the Youth Self-Report Internalizing Scale and the Reynolds Adolescent Depression
Scale assess problem behaviour and depressive symptoms
- the CAFAS assessed functional impairment in multiple areas including moods/self-
harm
- baseline assessments were obtained for adolescents and guardians
- six-month follow-up assessments took place a mean of 197 days after baseline
Intervention Strategies?
- provides psychoeducation for support persons whom youths nominate from within and
outside their family, and it facilitates the supportive weekly contact of these support
persons with the suicidal adolescent
- designed to enhance adolescentsʼ support system through increased communication
and emotional support
- sessions were 2 hours long and were designed to help people to understand the
youthʼs psychiatric disorder and treatment plan, suicide risk factors, strategies for
communicating with adolescents and emergency contact info
