Issues such as the age of the person as well as the severity of the disability will have an impact on the assessment procedures, instruments and techniques used. One important point is that the assessment should be functional and pragmatic. It should focus on the assessment of the skills which when taught will lead to the greatest degree of independence. It is also important to identify the techniques and procedures used to assess those skills. Some techniques such as nrt might be specific to the skill area selected as some are best for social skills while others are best for academic skills. Others can be used in more than one functional skill and gather information in almost any area such as crt. Another important aspect is the progress monitoring or determining the effectiveness of an instructional program. Informal techniques include: observations, portfolios and curriculum based measurement.
