SOAN 2040 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Skilled Worker, General Union, Stationary Process
Document Summary
Before the factories were introduced, most of the commodities persons needed were made at home. The earliest factories were the textile mills established in ne in the 1790"s with a variety of products; shoes, steels and firearms for example. Many of these factories represented a kind of compromise between the old methods of craft production in workshops and the new system of factory production. Skilled craftsmen in the 19th century really enjoyed the considerable power and autonomy in the workplace. The reason for this was their knowledge of the product and manufacturing process as without their cooperation there was no production. One part of the code specified that every craftsman should keep his output within a fixed limit or quota so as to avoid competition among themselves of any expectations from employers of higher productivity. Another moral code was the understanding that a worker should not work when a boss or foreman was watching as this was not manly.
