Before a researcher examines quantitative data to test hypotheses, he or she needs to reorganize them in a different form. Data coding means systematically reorganizing raw numerical data into a format that is easy to analyze using computers. Data becomes complex when the data is not well reorganize or not originally in the form of numbers. Researchers develop rules to assign certain numbers to variable attributes. Each category of a variable needs a code. A codebook is a document describing the coding procedure and the location of data for variable in a format that computer use. When you code data it is essential to create a well-organized, detailed codebook and make multiple copies of it. If you do not write down the details of the coding procedure or misplace the book you may have lost all the data and have to recode it.
