Science is a logical system that bases knowledge on direct systematic observation. Stands apart from faith, belief, or conventional wisdom. Problems of health: (cid:498)most people marry because they are in love. (cid:499) increase in old age but, by and large, elderly people retain their distinctive personalities and interests, not always. In many societies, marriage has nothing to do with love. Three ways to do sociology: scientific sociology, based on systematic observation of social behaviour on the basis of empirical research. Concept: a mental construct that represents some part of the world in a simplified form. Variable: a concept whose values change from case to case.
